I am about to order an engagement ring for my girlfriend. I have the diamond and the setting all picked out, and the place will mount the diamond before they send it. However, I plan to have the stone appraised once I get it to make sure it matches to its certification. Will the stone being mounted be a problem for the appraiser? Should I tell them to send the two seperate and have them put together after the appraisal?

It should not be a problem at all! Any good jeweler can do an appraisal either in a mount or not!

A proper appraisal requires the stone to be removed from the setting, but that will be included in the cost of the appraisal along with putting it back in the setting. If the appraisal doesn't include all this, find another appraiser.

They can look at it for you without taking it out. It should not be a problem. But just in case call the appraiser you plan to go to.
And, congrats on the engagement. I hope it all goes well.
