Dogs can definitely understand more than one word at a time - every dog I've ever had has been able to pick the words they know out of a sentence.
However, when you're training a dog if you say something like sit down, you're going to have a neurotic dog on your hands from trying to figure out what it is you really want since you're giving the poor dog 2 commands in one. Be clear when giving commands.
A dog can understand come and come here, but you need to pick one and stick to it. You don't want to constantly be confusing the poor dog.
And no, dogs are not color blind.

No some dogs can and some cant. It all depends on what breed. for instance. My gsd, if i say sit, down, roll over, sit. He will. Where as my westie will only sit, and has to wait for next command afterwards. But with a lab you should have no problems. Just keep the commands short and sweet. And single words seem to work better. Like come, would be better than come here. Labs are intelligent, they dont lead the blind because there stupid, lol.
Speaking of which, dogs are not colour blind.

Some researchers think that a few words can be pieced together but I don't believe it. My own experience tells me that the dogs only pick up the first portion of the first syllable unless really made to think. For instance, a person says, "let's go ride in the car" said in a happy voice; the dog hears "let's blah blah blah blah blah" and responds to that first word and tone. This is why sit and stay are often confused and why two sets of my dogs have a hard time understanding their names (Tali Lachi and Tawny plus Ishoka and Nashoba). Tone is also important. I have a single word that my dogs understand to mean three different things depending on how I say it.
Bottom line is that it is best to stick to a single monosyllable word for a command.
Dogs can see colors but nowhere as well as we can according to the latest research.

Dogs understand what you teach them. The simpler the command the easier to understand. If you use sitdown for sit, and down for down, they aren't sure which one you want for sitdown. (sit or down) or if you tell them sitdown and laydown, they get confused because of the down in both commands. I train my dogs in agility and compete as well, and there are times that I'm giving them one command right after another depending on their speed and the course, so they can understand more than one word at a time, but like I said, the simpler the better.
I've heard that dogs are color blind, but how can they tell us that they don't see red, instead they see green. So I don't know if they are or not.

Sorry, dogs are not color blind. They have more rods and less cones than we do which allows them to see better in the dark, but then colors appear more drab to them, but they can see them.
And dogs can understand a whole lot more than one word. My dogs know tons of words.

My dog understood 'let's go for a drive in the car.' That's a sentence.
My cat understands 'do you want to go outside?'
And if they could talk, they would probably tell you that they understand more than you think!

Dogs can under stand whole sentences. When I was a kid I could say to my dog "You want to go for a walk" and he would run for the closet where his leash was kept. But if I said "You want to go for a bath" he would run and try to hide. Dogs are a lot smarter then we give them credit for.
Color blind, no. They just see less color then we do.

Mine understand more than one word at a time. And no, dogs are NOT colorblind. They have rods and cones just like us humans! They can see all the same colors we can... they just appear diluted.
