I put the cover on his cage each night between 11-11.30 pm and although he goes on his swing (where he sleeps) he dosent actually sleep until ive gone to bed.

I can hear him cracking his beak and fluffing his feathers, sometimes jumps off the swing, then back on.

He must know im still up and on the computer but i only have a desk lamp on, not the big light, and no music or noise.

Budgies, like all parrots, are flock animals, so they do what the flock (ie, you) is doing! He also has GREAT hearing, so he can hear you awake making noise.

If he's cracking his beak, he is contented, happy, and getting sleepy and ready for bed.

Sounds like a great bird!

For good health, birds need 12-hours of rest and solitude. As soon as the sun goes down ours want to go to bed which is what they do in the wild. However, if he knows you're up even though he is covered, he probably won't sleep until you go to bed.

Birds are light sleepers, and even when they are resting, they will frequently wake up and move around a little. He probably moves around while you are sleeping as well, but you don't notice those small noises when you're asleep.

My parakeets never went to bed, until I went to bed, and my cockatiel doesn't either. But they napped in the daytime, and so does my cockatiel. During the winter months, I have been covering the cage of my cockatiel and he will sleep in, in the mornings.
