No, not true!

There are scam artists who will contact people claiming that they are due an additional refund, either due to an error on their return or that not enough of the tax cuts were passed along. They'll ask your SSN and other details to "verify your identity" and often ask for your bank account details so that the refund can be deposited directly. With all of that info in hand, they'll steal your identity and drain your bank account before you know what happened.

If you have been contacted by these scam artists and gave them any personal details, contact your bank immediately and have your account frozen for any ACH out transactions. Then contact the big three credit bureaus and put a freeze on your credit record to prevent anyone using your personal details to steal your identity.

If the IRS thinks that you made a mistake on your return or that they otherwise owe you money they will contact you by mail. They NEVER call you or e-mail you with that type of information. The letter will explain the error and will tell you how much money you are to receive. They will follow up with either a paper check in your mailbox or a direct deposit to your bank if that's how your original payment or refund was handled. The will NEVER ask you to "confirm" anything.

No, never heard of that one.

Last year there was a telephone tax credit available to most people. This was for a tax that was collected and was later ruled by the courts that it shouldn't have been - dated back to well before Bush.

Quite a few of my clients have been targetted. The scam artists seem to be targetting .edu email addresses at the moment. As Bostonianinmo says, this is a scam. Please follow his advice.
