We have a cat that is an indoor cat. He is pretty much scared of everything. Problem is when my husband goes in or out of the house he leaves the door open for too long and I always say ''hurry up and close the door or the cat will run out'' he tells me the cat won't because he is afraid. He is very non chalant about how long the door is left open. Our cat is fixed. My husband knows how much the cat means to our son so please don't answer this by saying he wants the cat to get lost. So is he right, the cat wont run out? I think he will, what do you guys think?

Note: Thnks everyone, As far as getting a storm/screen door put in, it's not my house and the landlord couldn't care less. Now I can show my husband what the majority have to say about my concern which is pretty much common sense.

That question cannot be answered definitively. It pretty much varies from cat to cat. some cats are so overwhelmed with their sense of curiosity that they become compelled to run outside to see what's there. Cat's aren't exactly notorious about pre-meditating their decisions & it could very well happen that a smart, well behaved indoor cat could possibly run outside w/o any thought to the consequenses. If they've never been outside then they have no real concept of the dangers that exist outside (becoming lost in a new environment being a large one).

My personal attitude on this subject is "better safe than sorry". Your cat may or may not choose to run out, but the better question is, "why give him the opportunity?" Hope this helps some.

Cats CAN and will do the unexpected so it's 90% likely the cat will make a dash for the door and get outside. If he's frightened out there he'll be impossible to catch. Better get the husband to wise up and take this seriously.

even an indoor cat will go outside if given the chance. wouldnt you in the same situation? you need to have a serious talk with your husband about beign a responsible grown-up and closing the door. closing the door is not a difficult thing to accomplish and it is absurd if he doenst listen to you repeated requests. also if your indoor cat does get out who knows if you will ever see her again

Evenutally the cat will become curious and venture out the door. It took mine about 7 years, but it happened and then he got scared and took off. We searched for an entire afternoon before we found him in a neighbors window well.

Keep telling your hubby to close the door!

The cat probley wouldn't run out straight away but if he keeps leaving the door open the cat will pluck up more and more courage and will venture out.

Hi there...perhaps you could install screen doors that automatically close behind everyone? Cats are naturally curious and over time they do build courage to explore.

I agree with Skirmish - absolutely better safe than sorry. You don't want to find out the hard way!
