Schnauzers are prone to allergies, so no foods made by Purina, Eukanuba, IAMS, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree, etc. as they contain way too much grain and corn and other fillers that will make them sick and itch. Look for those with no corn, wheat, or soy and by-products are not recommended. Good examples are Chicken Soup, Canidae, Innnova EVO, Timberwolf Organics, Merrick, some the Solid Gold, etc.

Any dog food provides 100% of the nutrition that a dog needs and each has their own set of marketing gimmicks to get people to buy them. So, buy whatever dogfood best agrees with your own preconceptions as it matters what you think but it doesn't matter to the dog.
Also, there are tons of misinformation out there especially on sites that rate dog foods. For instance, grain is a filler or corn cannot be digested. Dry dogfoods are meat flavored cereal so grains HAVE to be the main ingredient plus studies have shown that higher grain content lessens risks of digestive track cancers. The gimmick is splitting the grain into several types so each can be listed separetely bringing meat to the top. Only raw, whole corn cannot be digested easily.
Your vet is usually the best source for this - not self proclaimed "experts" on a web site or an auther.

I like to feed my dog Innova or California Natural. Lots of people have varying levels of pet food education and ideas as to what is right and what is wrong to feed. You need to educate yourself and not listen to anything a pet store employee or the vet tells you. The majority of people will recommend the popular junk foods like Science Diet, Iams and Purina, but they are no good.
Your best best would be to find a dog forum where the members are dedicated to the heath and wellbeing of their companion animals and are not just feeding a dog.

Any dog food thats first ingredient is a meat product. Most foods sold at walmart are not good. Those are mainly the lower sourse of protein, and foods thats first ingredient is corn. Corn based dog food are not good because corn is just a filler, it makes the dog feel full, but in reality the dog is gaining no protein from that diet. Foods such as science diet, pedagree, etc, are not good, they are corn based, and many assume science diet is good, but vets only sell is because they get paid to do so. I would get any food that is meat based...

The best dry foods out there will have no grains, high quality ingredients and a high meat content. You will want to avoid most commerical brands such as Pedigree, Purina, Science Diet, Iams ect.

Raw would be the healthiest chocie for your dog. Do some research on raw food and dog nutrition in general so you will be able to spot a good dog food on site. It will also give you a better understanding of why it is healthy
Almost none of this food is going to be available in chain petstores such as Petco or Petsmart. You will find them at smaller independent feed stores, petstores, or animal supply stores. Go to their websites and they will have something that says "where to buy" from there you will be able to find many stores near you that sell it.
Whatever you choose I would make sure you keep some variety in your dogs food. Mix different foods together.
Supplement Raw pellets in or even cooked meats, raw veggies and fruits. Remember table scraps are not bad, they tend to be healthier than what’s in your dogs pet food.
Feed a piece of that chicken you are having for dinner, give him a carrot from your plate, he will be much better off for it.
Just keep in mind that when you do that take that into account for his overall calorie intake for the day.
