From what I understand, not having seen the movie or read the books, the story takes place in a world in which the Church maintains the monopoly it had on learning in the Middle Ages, until finally some kids rebel against it. (I could easily have parts of this wrong but I think that's the gist.)

Many Catholic groups took this personally; but of course some, like yours I assume, see it as a classic story of good vs. evil.

What you could take from this - what all religious people SHOULD take from this, in my opinion - is the idea that sometimes the things that are labeled as "good" are actually evil, and vice-versa; and you can't ever just rely on external symbolism. There are a lot of things to which the Jesus™ brand name is attached that are really pure evil. Even as a Catholic, you can't just automatically assume that everything bearing the Catholic label is guaranteed holy and wise. There's no substitute for thinking for yourself.

Wow - and somebody disagrees with that. lol.

I am not sure your age, and I suppose at teh right age, the movie can be used to show how the enemy tries to invade our lives thru media and such, but I am rather shocked your principal would advise his students to see an anti-God, anti-Christ movie.

Many are being fooled into thinking this is a harmless fantasy like Tarabithia or Cronicles of Narnia. It is VERY far from it. It is written by a British author who is considered on of the most "dangerous" writers of our time. While the movie is tame compared to the books, He has openly stated that it is his hope that children will see the movie, and parents will get the books for them for Christmas, and after reading the books, they will make a clear stand against God. He hopes that one day God will be dead in the minds on children because he calls Christianity a powerful mistake, and an ex-nun character in the movie states so.

The end of the trilogy of books has two characters, a boy and girl who represent Adam and Eve kill God, who they say has made people falsely belive He was the creator of all things.

As an alternative, there is a small movie calle Noelle that is being raved by Dove Foundation.

Actually, I believe the Bishops came out and said they found nothing wrong with it.

Make up your own mind about it. The author of the Golden Compass, has woven his atheistic views throughout the story. I think the biggest concern is for children who may get the impression that God and religion are oppressive and controlling. Something we need "saving" from. Most Christian parents do not agree with this and would not want their young children exposed to it when they are not old enough to process and understand such a view.

You don't need anyone to tell you what to do. Make up your own mind.

It must really suck to be unable to make a decision about something as simple as a movie, without having to take the Catholic school's position and whether or not it's a "sin" into consideration. Talk about complicating your life.

The only sin in going to see The Golden Compass is lining Hollywood's pockets with more money.
They are all hypocrites.

Don't watch this movie.
You know CS Lewis? The dude who made Choronicles of Narnia? He use to be an athiest. But he became a Christian. Choronichles of Narnia is mainly all about the Bible, and how Aslan is God...and blah blah blah.
Now the Dude who made "Golden Compass" is an Atheist. His books were meant to oppose everything about Choronicles of Narnia. He's said it publicly himself. And I quote, "If Athiests prayed, this would be the movie they were praying for." He hates CS Lewis. Golden Compass is about this girl who is confused about god and stuff, and in the last book, two characters representing adam and eve KILL god.
Even as I type this, an email is going all around the word, warning people about this movie and not to watch it or support it. The whole purpose of this movie is that, well, its Christmas time! Advertisers are hoping kids will see the movie, and beg thier parents to buy the books. Please do not fall into this trap.
Be supportive, and stand alongside the rest of millions of people who will not see this movie. Do not watch the Golden Compass.

That is refreshing (assuming you are not kidding). It is just a movie, watching a movie is not a sin, and most of the things could be considered remotely offensive have been removed from it. Feel free to go see it...

No,
the movie is fine.
I went to see it on Friday and there is nothing wrong with it.

And if a movie could change your beliefs they weren't very strong in the first place.

Only people who are so insecure with themselves and their faith that they'd be threatened by a fantasy movie would boycott it.

Everyone else... well, congratulations, they're both secure in themselves and their faith, and they get to watch an entertaining movie to boot.
