The formula for projectile motion is:

Distance = (v² x sin(2Ф)) ÷ g

where:
v = velocity at launch
Ф = angle
g = acceleration due to gravity

The maximum value of sin(2Ф) occurs when Ф = 45°

Keep in mind that this is only the distance aloft. It does not take into account any bouncing or rolling of the projectile after it lands.

This also assumes that the velocity of the projectile is at its maximum value regardless of how far the catapult's arm travels.
