i noticed that there is a good 50 hp gap between the older (late 80s) 300zx's and the newer ones (non turbo-of course)-why is that?

oh and comments like cuz newer is better or some ignorant crap like that isnt helpful so please dont waste my time saying something like that.

im looking for a specific reason, change in actual stroke, compression, cam specs, fuel system, ???? something in particular caused the large rise in hp after the 300zx's first couple of years.

Yes the same 12 valve VG 3.0 engine block made a jump in power 1988 had only 12 valves and 300zx 1990 to 1994 had 24 valve heads better flow better engine electronic controls coil over spark plug design twin cat converters. Everything is geared to how much air and fuel the engine can burn properly. Now 350Z 3.5 liter has even more 307 hp. And if the owner uses power wisely the gas mileage will even be better. Partially due to more over drive in 5th and 6th gear. Today's cars are about 15% less effiecent than they can be with even more electronic controled camshafts and throttleless intake systems. (see Valvetronic BMW) and Stratified Charge engine systems.

the difference in the horse power is due to the engineering and government regulations, in the united states cars could only have a certain amount of horse power. I would say most of it is due to technology , and tighter clearances in the engine itself on the newer 300's . I had one and it would really get with it , the new ones are almost too fast for this country, i rented one in germany and drove the autoban it would do 175 and I slowed down, so take that as you wish

What condition are the cars in? How many miles difference? What year are the cars? Were either of the years better years for that manufacturer? How well was each car kept? What type of driving was each car used for? Where in the country has each car been located? What are the car histories? What is the price difference between the cars? You need to ask all of these questions as well to figure out which car will be the better offer.
