First off, to clarify what JD has said....

There is/was no such brand as a "Marvel Nitro". It is, in fact, a "Nitro Marvel" as it says on the side....and on about a dozen other guns marked as such.

It was *never* made by Crescent as JD stated....it was in fact made by J. Stevens. Savage bought Stevens in 1920 so if your firearm has anything OTHER than "Savage Stevens" (or a lack of same) on it, it's pre-1920. The Nitro Marvel name was used on firearms by Stevens from approx 1895-1920....and after that they were labeled as Savage Stevens. Savage didn't buy Crescent until after the Nitro Marvel name ceased to exist..

You can go to gunbroker.com and search on "stevens shotgun".....and compare yours to the ones listed there. That's the only way you'll be able to identify your shotgun's model. There were only a small handful so it's no real big deal. It's something you need to do eventually because you'll eventually need replacement parts.

Btw, great gun....it's one I collect. It *is* quite common and it *is* a store brand as JD said so it's not really valuable as a collectible.

Better go back and edit real quick, JD.

I think you meant to say your Shotgun was "Patented" in
1896. If you were to look again you should see a date of August 17, 1896 as the correct PATENT date.

If this is the case your "Marvel-Nitro" Shotgun was manufactured by the Crescent Firearms Company sometime between 1900-1931 in Norwich, Connecticut.(Formerly Crescent-Davis Arms Corporation)

Crescent Firearms Company was a manufacturer of what is referred to as "House Brand" Shotguns. Crescent "Private Labeled" firearms for Distributors, Retailers, and various mail-order houses.(Sears & Roebuck, J.C. Penny, Revelation, "Marvel" was just one of several such private label names these guns were sold under. Crescent holds over 100 "Patents" and trademarks to date. The two main Distributors were the Belknap Hardware Company in Louisville, Kentucky, and Hibbard-Spencer-Bartlett Company in Chicago, Illinois (Both out of business )

In 1931 Savage Arms Company bought, Crescent Firearms Company then assembled the remaining inventory of firearms parts and sold them just under the Crescent name.Just one year later (1932) the City or Norwich,CT seized the Crescent company factory for non-payment of taxes The operation was moved to Chicopee Falls, only to go out of business for good a short time later.......

Your shotgun was one of literally thousands of mass produced shotguns, so it really has no real collectors value.
If it is a family heirloom, I would suggest you keep it regardless of it's value.....
