Jokes To Go: 1,386 Of The Funniest Bits From the Best Comedians (Paperback)
by Judy Brown
I am not kidding. This book or something like it is one of the best treatments for depression. If you can get him laughing, he has to take time off being depressed.
Also "A New Pair of Glasses" by Chuck Chamberlain. Possibly a story that could provide a sense of optimism that your friend sorely needs right now.

depression is often a side-symptom of someone who has become jaded with their life, and needs something a little challenging as well as light-hearted. (this isn't the only thing that causes depression: you will need to be the judge of whether your friend needs a mild jolt as well as a lift).

It's a book for people who are depressed, so the chapters are kept short and simple. It's written by Christians but isn't especially Christian in its content. I have a couple of friends who've had depression and have found it helpful.

Never read it, heard about it, don't know who wrote it, but intuitively feel it would be good for this person.

When my mom was really depressed, she read "Who Moved My Cheese," and said she really liked it. I hope that helps!
