If the barrel is properly cut and re-crowned the accuracy will probably not be affected. (If you're thinking of a do-it-yourself hack saw job, the accuracy will be destroyed.) The load that it prefers may change as the harmonics of the barrel vibration will change.. The velocity will be slightly decreased and the trajectory will be slightly less flat.
I would not shorten the barrel of a rifle chambered for a flat shooting cartridge designed for long range shooting.

genuinely. Longer barrels are greater precise, as are thicker barrels, time-venerated as bull-barrels or objective barrels. The commerce off is weight. Longer thicker barrels tend to be heavier. They sense like they weigh greater desirable than they actually do because of the fact the load is plenty away out of your physique, so which you're no longer able to assist it as particularly in case your no longer taking photos from a bipod or a relax. each and every element on your taking photos combination impacts the accuracy to a pair degree. The scopes/factors of interest, set off, ammo, barrel, the style you carry the rifle, the style you pull the set off, and how your inventory is connected all effect accuracy. Remeber that accuracy is the paintings of growing to be your firearm greater consistant. Consistancy is fundamental. taking photos the comparable way, pulling the set off the comparable speed each time, utilising the comparable good high quality ammo each time, and cleansing your firearm the comparable way will all assist you get greater desirable accuracy. in case you prefer great accuracy from any gun, and you have the money, take it to a gunsmith. they are able to make modifications on your firearm together with re-bedding the inventory, setting up a Timney or Jewell set off, helping you install a high quality scope ect or getting a miles better barrel put in. you've gotten them do crazier paintings too, together with welding the scope mounts to the action (a gunsmith interior the US named patrick holehan pioneered this a number of years in the past) or lightening the firing pin/mechanism to hurry up the lock time. (reduces the innaccruacy out of your aiming) I be conscious that your demonstrate call is .308..... To get the main out of a .308, or any severe ability cartrige, you're finding at a 24 inch barrel on the max. 22 inch basically isn't much less precise, and lots much less annoying to hold and objective. It and 20 inch tend to be the norm. in case you're taking photos rimfire, (.22's or .17's) a sixteen inch barrel won't make a huge distinction because of the fact the vast majority of rimfire ammunition isn't very precise by potential of assessment. desire this facilitates!

It will decrease the velocity slightly, (50FPS or so).
As to accuracy, a lot depends on how well the new
muzzle crown compares with the old, and how the
vibration period of the barrel changes.
My advice,: "If it works, don't fix it."

Don't go cutting your barrel. You should be able to find a factory barrel in a different length.
Maybe you could tell us what you're trying to accomplish? Does it not fit in your case? The trunk of your car?
