Play with the flash, I find with my camera that makes a huge difference with up close pictures.
other than that, It's really hard to say....do you make stupid faces?
Try having someone else take pics.

Ok, you wanna take a decent self photo.
1) Get urself made up the way you want.
2)You will need a timer function or a tripod for ur camera (or even a remote switch if you have one).
3) Go outside, in the shade, on a sunny day. The lighting will be indirect, which will soften the photo
4) Aim the camera, focus it, and strike a pose.

Practice is the best way. Take a class in school or at the local community center. Join a photography club. You can go digital or use film. Digital is expensive at the outset, but you don't have to pay for film or developing. Film is great, used cameras are cheaper and so are the lenses. Go online to places like KEH.com know what things cost, and then go to a local show and haggle. I'd recommend getting a used 35mm film scanner if you go with film. it only costs like 1.59 to develop film at costco and you can use the scanner to only scan your best prints rather than pay for prints for a whole roll.

subject and lighting are the key here. depends on your aduience and what message are you trying to convey, you can kinda figure out the design of your pictures.
then it is time to take the shots - with a point and shot digital camera with no hotshoes, you might want to take advantage of the natural lighting and avoid the build-in flash. Wait for a late afternoon when there's good side lighting from the window. Take a pictures right next to the window. you can position yourself to get a different effect of lighting.
hope this helps.

SELF-photos ...Oh dear!
Tripod, timer, natural daylight, focus set on something in the same plane as you WILL be, diffused daylight ...
Why not get someone who knows what they are doing to do it for you? Cultivate real people and make real friends. One of them will be able to produce something that you like?
