His teaching was about God our redeemer.
If a person grasps that which Jesus taught, they would be free from the condmenation of sin and its enslavement of them.

Jesus said that a man's own household will be against him, this is true because so many Jews did not believe him because of the way the Romans were treating them. They thought that the Savior were caming to fight against the Romans but GOD sent Christ on a better mission. And this truth was that He was the Son of God and the truth, the way, and the life.

I think Jesus meant that they would be considered a follower, believer, put their faith in Him. Jesus use of the word disciples isn't saying they will become one of the 12 disciples, but more like a Christian. Believing in Jesus for their salvation means not believing they can be saved by the works some of the Jewish leaders said a person had to preform to be saved. I think Jesus is telling them that good deeds, doing good things is just that--good, but doing good isn't what saves them. I think He is telling them that once they know this, once they believe He is the way of salvation, they will be free of the Jewish rules and become free of sin.

Basically, I think it is saying that if you "do" what he teaches, then that is a sign that you are really a follower of him. If you just listen to what he teaches, even understand what he teaches, but do otherwise, you are not a true follower or believer. Jesus is truth so if you follow him, you will have truth and have the power to overcome sin, setting you free from the power of sin. Otherwise, you will have an alternative to sin.

Well, you just cannot read one verse because it can be taken in a totally different context that what is really meant. Now, if you read the whole chapter and realize that there is more to just holding onto a teaching then you will find out that more often than not you just cannot read something you have to put action behind it to be effective out there in the real world.
Remember works without faith is dead just as faith without works is also dead. So, read the whole chapter and find out what God had intended.

30As He spoke these things, many came to believe in Him.
The Truth Will Make You Free
31So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine;
32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
He means as you continue to read His word and learn you will
be free

The Jews were under bondage to the Law. Jesus came to fulfill the Law and to set free all those that would follow Him. (ref. Galatians 4)
