The Italians are a warm, kind, generous, loving people. Visit their home and they'll offer you the best cheese you ever tasted along with some homedmade biscotti and a cup of dark coffee. However, remember that "tolerate" is the key word here.

Beliefs have nothing to do with nationality, a German or Polish Pope is no way a problem.
What most Italians can hardly tolerate are the increasing attempts by the Vatican (and this Pope in particular) to interfere with a secular society, as Italy is.

Uhh Italy as well as the Pope and Vatican supported the Nazis during WWII. Somehow I doubt they'd have a huge problem with a German Pope.
