I agree with you, people have lost the art of being a parent who is in control. It seems to me that most people let their children control THEM (and NO I am not young, and DO have kids) my kids just know how to listen and know who the boss is, and it's NOT them.

I also find it amazing how parents tone out to their kids. We live in the Orlando , Fla area and constantly come in contact with people from all parts of the world. Thank goodness most do keep their kids under control and consider others around them. However, you always see kids just running crazy and the parents seem to be in another world. We've seen kids sitting and standing on top of restaurant tables and the parents either don't notice or seem not to care. It appears the attitude is, if they aren't giving the parent a hard time, its OK. We always wonder what their homes must look like. Bottom line, many parents have forgotten (or never knew) what it is to be a parent. I think they want to be a buddy or friend. As I mentioned earlier, thank goodness for good, involved parents.

I agree with most of what you say but I would be a little less judgmental so far as a restaurant is concerned. I take it you are young and do not have children. I am not young and have grandchildren two of whom I do not see as often as I would like
because they live 200 miles away. So i and my wife are delighted when a child comes to talk to us in a restaurant and asks all sorts of questions

Yes, we all know someone who we think is a bad parent.

But as far as children being out late on a school night! Now granted, I wouldn't let my kids be out that late alone, but keep in mind that alot of parents homeschool their children and therefore don't have to adhere by the schedule of the public schools.

How is this an etiquette question???

These things are not ideal, but remember, nobody is perfect. When you become a parent, you will realize it. When you point 1 finger, you have 3 pointing back at you.

Would you call someone a bad parent for not ensuring a proper education for their children? A-L-L-O-W. They're (not there). Drink and drive, not drank and drive. And the word parent's shows ownership of something. You mean parents.

I think we've all been around bad parents. Everyone has a story. It's truly a shame. Many people have had their animals taken away due to neglect, but still have children.

Yes there are a lot of irresponsible parents out there who haven't quite grown up themselves yet.

Oh, I know many. Luckily, I am not one of them. I figure, if you are going to keep your child, raise it right. We have two, by the way.
