I'm trying to figure out what Fusil d'Assaut de la Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Étienne (FAMAS, the rifle made by the french navy in 95) means in english. all i know is that d'Assaut means assault and d'Armes de Saint-Etienne is the french's version of rock island or Springfield. so what does Fusil mean?

Fusil is rifle-the FAMAS is like calling a Model 1903 Rifle a Springfield: just the manufacturer name. A CETME rifle is the same way-CETME is the Spanish weapons manufacturer wo modified the STg45 and produced the rifle.

I think it's "Assault Rifle of the Arms Manufacture of Saint 'Etienne". That's a literal word for word translation, probably means "Assault Rifle manufactured in Saint Etienne" in French language.

It basically means "rifle" or specifically a "light rifle."

You may have heard the term Royal Fusiliers in the British Army...Just like you probably heard the term Musketeers and Grenadiers...In French tradition a "fusilier" is a light infantryman or mounted rifleman, both of whom would need a lighter rifle than a standard musket or long-rifle.
