"Clarissa" with a C is a name I've known all my life, although I can't think of a person with that name that I've actually known. It's the name of a 1748 English novel and is sometimes thought to have been invented by the author, Samuel Richardson, for his main character, although there are a few records of it and its variant "Clarice" as far back as the Middle Ages. It means "brightness."
