Alhamdulillah, I have a very good Muslim as one of my roommates, and we sometimes pray together (we have varying schedules at university, so we can't do it all the time).

However, when he leads in prayer, he takes very long pauses and generally takes his time (a lot more than normal). I do not rush prayer myself, but the amount of time he takes is just exceptional.

I've found myself lately telling him that I've already prayed (when I have not) when he asks because of the stressful exam period that we're in. What are your opinions on this?

Just to note, I don't miss the prayer, I simply do it alone in these times.

Yes, talk to you roommate and tell him you're going to pray alone if he can't shorten his salah during the finals. I don't think 2 or even 5 extra minutes in salah would save much time, but I understand the psychology during finals. May Allah be with us and help us pass the tests of Dunya and the test of Akhirah.

Lying is wrong. As the Prophet(saw) use to say, tell the truth no matter how bitter.
There is another way to tackle this problem. I can't pin point the actual hadith that says this, but I hope others can give you the actual hadith. In essence, there is one time duirng a congregational prayers, a man was reciting from a long surah and this makes it difficult for the congregation to follow him. They took the matter to Rasulullah(saw) and Rasulullah(saw) in firm voice said,"He should have recite from the surah 'Ala and Surah Ad-Dhuha."
The Lesson, in congregational prayers, either in big group or just the two of you, it is advisable to shorten the recited surah to make it easy for the congregation. Because not everybody can follow long prayers, some may have things to do(like your studies for the coming exam), or the old folk who can't stand that long in prayers. Unless of course if the person or the congregation that is with you expect you to recite long verses, then its okay. And it is ok to read long verses if you are praying alone. As Rasulullah(saw) mention once, read what is easy from Quran during prayers and recite beautifully, for he who doesn't recite the Quran in a melodious voice he is not of us.
***I'm sorry I can't remember which hadith that say this because I have only read it once quite sometime ago, I remember the lesson, but I can't remember the narrator.

Sounds like lying to me. Have you tried to discuss the situation with him?

better perform salah with someone if possible, \
ask him why he's taking such long pause, understand first before making conclusion.
when i lead the salah, after the al fatiha, i also pause for enough time so that others may recite their al fatiha in a phase not fast nor too slow.

Salam
Allah (SWT) has gave you everything in this world. Air to breathe, food to eat, water to drink....
And we have to thankAllah (SWT) for all the creations he has created. It is only 5 minutes/less/more (it depends...)
Can you give up a few minutes of your life to Allah (SWT)????
I know exams are stressful, but if you pray for Allah (SWT) to help you revise and get through the Exam. Inshallah Allah will accept your Dua's
Pray with your room mate you get more Hassanate for praying with someone else/group of people.

Inshallah you will pray better in the future and i hope you do well in your exams!
Peace be upon you

Isn't lying a sin. Talk to your roommate about the length of time if it bothers you that much. Or simply pray on your own.

Brother, this really isn't wise to lie about a salat. you better ask him not to take long pauses. and if he doesn't listen to you, then when you are really busy or tired, offer your salat the way you want, but when ever you are free, pray with him. :) !

Tell the truth.

Quiet Within: Are you sure it's Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) who said that? ((tell the truth, even if it's bitter)) I thought it was Abu Bakr?

Concentrate on your exams. Forget about prayer for now.
Allah will forgive you when you graduate and donate money in his cause.
And tell your friend to get his prayer mat and get out, you've got work to do.
Inshallah all your problem will be solved.

according to one hadith, if you take time praying you get more sawab, damn, theres a hadith for everthing, they don't let you escape from any direction.
