I'm Lutheran and asking the pastor from my mother's church to do the service. Incidentally my mom's church is the family church we've gone to for over 40 years and I grew up in. I live too far away to attend there now though. The pastor said that I don't have to pay/give a donation the church for the baptism, but mom thinks I should give something to the pastor.

-$8, don't you pay him already? I never thought you should tip someone you're also paying. Unless he's like the pizza guy. Does the minister sell pizzas? Than it's like 20% right?

it's not a set "fee" for donation. Some people don't have a lot of money to use for things like that. What you do is take a plain white envelope, write the ministers name on the outside, and place the amount you can afford to give inside. I would suggest starting at $20.00 but not go over $50.00. It's not expected or needed. Just be sure to place a thank you note or card inside addressed personally to the minister by name. Seal it and after the ceremony, hand it to him with your thanks.

You should not "pay" the pastor for doing his job however all churches have funds for special community needs you can make a donation there,if you feel you must.

any minister should do this service for free... i believe that it would be appropriate to make an offering to the church in the family's name for the special occasion. i would not make the donation amount any less than a weeks tithes

The minister got your baby into heaven. That's worth at least $200 dollars.

you should 'donate' to the church and not 'tip' the minister that's too comercialization... maybe invite them back to the after party if you are having one, or a gift card to a book store??
