I used my martial arts skills in a fight only once, when I was in High School. I was being bullied by two guys and I used a Judo throw (the classic O-goshi hip throw -- it never fails to impress) to take down the larger of the two. I let him down easy, then told him to cut it out. He challenged me to meet him (and presumably his buddies) after school, and I just laughed.
I could have used other martial arts skills, but this was the right one, because it altered their perception of me as an easy target. Also, I avoided hurting or humiliating anyone, which means I didn't have to spend the rest of my school career looking over my shoulder. It does no good to fight but start a war you can't win.
By the way, if you think it is easy and safe to punch somebody, you haven't tried it. You can't punch hard enough to end a fight quickly (essential) without breaking your hand -- not unless you've trained to do so. Even then a boxer's fracture is pretty likely. That's why so many fights end up as grappling tussles.
It's true that martial artists often fail to use their skills when confronted with a self-defense situation. I believe the problem comes from sparring exclusively with people who are easy and predictable for them. When faced with somebody launching an aggressive but unpredictable attack, they don't have the automatic reaction to put their skills to use.

Many many many times I've used my fighting skills.
In 30 yrs I've only been hit badly once, and that's when I tried your punching tactic.
All the times I've been successful, is when I talked people down.
If you avoid confrontation, you are avoiding life.
But if someone puts you in a position where you must defend yourself, then fast and clear talking always works for me.
You must be respectful, (even though you know they're wrong)
and you must be clear that there is no point in fighting.
Use psyche and don't be scared.
There is more bravery standing up to someone bigger than you without hitting out, than in getting a beating.
Or worse you might win the fight and lose the war by ending up in court.
Punching is for professionals!

I used too alot Half of my face went paralized when I was a sophmore in high school and at that point I had 6 years of martial arts experience and I didn't put up with kids making fun of something I had no control over. I do my best not to fight anymore I have a problem stopping

I used my fighting skills for many years after being young boxer. I 'took it to the streets' and mixed with alcohol and bad manners all I really did was lose most my skills.
I developed a nose for trouble and a great suckerpunch and that was about it..When I got back to competition again I had to pretty much learn all over.

I care about using my wits, and out smarting em. I try to use my wits every day. To not fight is a victory on the streets, and in the ring well, we use what we learn. Imagine making the problem maker a fool to all and never having to fight.

Fortunately, I've never had to use my Shotokan skills, but then I have never placed myself in a position to have to use them. I find infinite satisfaction in walking away from fools. I learned early on in Shotokan that I am training for an event that I hope will never happen... but that's just the way I look at it, and humbly I add I have never been hurt, or hurt anyone.

once i had to use it at school
Got a boost off the table with my arms and slammed a kick into another guy's face, but he turned at the last second and it hit his each instead. Punching for me doesnt work well

i got into a fight and all i used from my art was bloking but the guy was a really bad fighter i just came over his jab with a left hook and dropped him but i think it would definately help imma 2nd degree blak belt and my training has def helped me if i didnt know all i do then i would have probably gotten hit quite a few times then

a few tiems, i don't do kung-fu or karate, i do street CQC ( close quarter combat ) and shotokan, but all i really do is put them down in a hold or submission
