the pain is not of the skin but rather of something close to the bone that when pressed in a particular way I feel a short pang of pain - sometimes its sends pain down my finger to my hand. other than these moments of pain my hand is absolutely fine!? If anyone has clue as to what this could be I would be very grateful for you to let me know. Many thanks

This could be related to something like carpal tunnel syndrome which has to do with nerves in that area (the wrist area and such) being a problem.

The only way to find out for sure what is going on is to see your doctor for further evaluation of the situation to see what they think could be going on.
