tilt it back as in look towards the sky 45* back, not flat on your back back...

then just apply pressure and/or stick a piece of tightly folded up paper towel in there...

some people say tampons... but i've never tried it...

It used to be that tilting your head back was recommended. But I think there became issues of just swallowing too much blood (which is bad for you), and there are choking issues. I haven't heard about it being bad for your sinuses, but blood anywhere but where its supposed to be isn't really all that good.
So it is now recommended to tilt your head forward and pinch your nose shut to stop the blood flow.

Put ice in a small towel and put it on top your forehead and tilt your head flat, not back. It's very rare that the blood would go to the sinuses.

ok, do not lean your head back. instead pinch the tip of your nose for a full 3 minutes or until it stops. then you can clean it up later when it stops. I havent hear of what happens when you get blood in the sinuses, but i hope i helped among all these people.

NO! Don't tilt your head back!

Lean forward a gently pinch your nose.

Then, this sounds weird but it works, take off your sock and shoe, and press hard in between your big toe and the toe next to it. About a 1/2 inch under the gap. Apply pressure for about 15 seconds. Don't let go until 15 seconds are over.

I learned this in Tae Kwon Do, and it works. It sends a signal to your liver or something and it stops quickly.

I did this when I got a nosebleed and it worked wonderfully. : )

I think you don't tilt your head back as you will not know how much your nose is bleeding into your stomach and this will make you sick eventually. use a cold flannel and tilt forward slightly pinching the nose to help stem the flow of blood. if you do not stop bleeding go to doctor.

My experience with tilting the head back when your nose is bleeding is that the blood goes down your throat and then you gag.
It's gross and enough to make you puke.

Pinch your nose firmly at the bridge and breathe slowly, sit very still, get calm until the bleeding stops.

Ok i get nose bleeds all the time! But the main reason why you dont want to tilt your head back is because it takes longer to clot! You wont get blood anywhere but in your throat and stomache (sp) but you need to lean forward so the blood can clot faster!\
Getting blood in my stomach makes me fill sick if its a long nose bleed. (i have had to lean back before because i didn't have a tissue)

Don't tip your head back, its actually becuase you can get blood in the lungs and potentially drown yourself. Lean forward and pinch the soft part of your nose. Apply ice if neccissary and wait for the blood to clot. After it has clotted do not pick at it or blow your nose for a few days. If it bleeds heavily for longer than 15 mins head to your ER.

ok if you lean back then the blood goes down your throat and you choke on it.(happened to me). What to do know is to lean forward and pinch your nose. Easy to remember where to pinch that you thumb nail and measure from between your eyes. The area is soft, and squeezable. Pinch it and lean forward. Once you do this the bleed will stop in about a couple of minutes.
