That's what someone here on Y!A said. He said he's a cop. I figure if you have something so personal, then use somebody else's computer. How can someone use your property & have every RIGHT not to tell you the reason why. Plenty of times in my life, I've asked people for help & they demanded an answer for why.If it's that personal, then my brother should use someone else's computer, right? Isn't that cheeky & selfish? You depend on ME & the reason why is none of my business. & that cop said if he were on the scene, he'd take both of us to jail because we're crazy losers.

If it's so personal, suppose somebody else used my computer & hacked his info. Or what if he wanted to use my computer tro hack my info. & passwords? He may be my brother, but he says he doesn't trust me. Why am I wrong for distrusting him? He doesn't trust me because he commits or sets others up to commit crimes, & I'm the one who reports them so I won't be an accessory.

No one, but family, uses MY computer unless they give me what I determine to be a good reason.
It's not provoking a fight. Tell the guy who says he's a cop to get screw himself.
If it's THAT personal the person should have their own computer.
Not be mooching YOURS.

Okay whoever said that you probably isn't a cop but some bum that has no idea what he's talking about. The computer is your property, so yes you have every right to ask why that person wants to use it and why. I mean, they could be downloading child porn or something. It's no different if somebody asks to use your car and you ask them why. They might want it for a drug run or something crazy like that. And guess what, if something happens to it, you get blamed because it was YOUR property.

I know this might instigate a fight with your brother, but if your brother says he can't trust you, then why should you trust him? It's unfortunate, but I would password lock your computer and not let him use it, or let him use it only if you're in the room bc he could be lying to you about what he's doing. It makes me suspicious that he won't tell you.

NO. It is YOUR computer. You have the right to refuse to let someone use it regardless of whether or not they have a good reason. Yes, they might get ticked off, but as long as you're courteous, that's their problem. A simple "I'm sorry, but I'm really not comfortable letting someone else use my computer." is perfectly acceptable. You also DO NOT have to justify that answer, even if they argue.

A computer is an expensive, and in some cases, fragile, piece of equipment. It often contains personal and private information. It's not community property.

Personally, I won't let either of my siblings use my computer. Sometimes they get miffed and tell me I'm a jerk, but they get over it.

Now, if your refusal is something like this: "Oh my God, are you serious? Why in the name of all things holy would I allow you to use my computer? Are you insane?" ... then, yes... that would be rude.

*edited to add... if you're asking a legal question about this situation deteriorating into a physical fight... I'm not qualified to answer that particular question.

I read your question, and the only person who said he was a cop had this answer, which I actually agree with:

"At first I'd be pissed that you two couldn't deal with your own family issues.
But if found your brother to be a mental case, and a danger to others or himself, I'd put him on a 72 hour hold (5150).
If he wasn't nuts enough for a psych hold and nobody was hurt, I'd give you two the "Don't call the police because your family sucks and you can't deal with it" speech. I give it all the time.
P.S. Don't hate me because I'm not PC about mental illness. Deal with it yourself, because when police have to get involved it can be dangerous for everyone.
If you two are juveniles, I'd tear your folks a new *** hole. I hate it when people leave their kids alone and they don't get along to the point of violence.

California cop."

I agree with what this cop said because I feel like this is a family issue that should have been resolved without resorting to calling the local police, who have REAL criminals and problems to deal with. You know, like writing us speeding tickets. :)

You are correct not to let your jerk-off brother use your computer. You were not provoking the fight. If that was really a cop answering (and I doubt it was) then he is a probably a loser rent a cop.

Sweetie! You are well within your rights to not only ask 'why' but you can just refuse point blank to let anyone else use your computer! For the exception of my B/F no one else can dare touch my computer! Forget about the so called cop on YA...just someone pulling your legs!!!
