ha, I just finished reading The Golden Compass, too! Very good book -- but it was fiction, you know.
If you're speaking metaphorically -- that's the question Pullman was asking -- and I think most people would agree the answer is NO.

apparently up until quite recently the human race often used to sacrifice children when building bridges they were buried along with the bricks and mortar to appease the gods, some even with a candle in hand to light the way
