Sorry, if I come off blunt- I'm in high school and I was assigned to create a resume as if I were currently pursuing my desired carreer. I am interested in being a veterinarian; for the objective of the resume, we have to be specific, though I'm not exactly sure what to put. What types of veterinarians are there/ what types of places do they work at? What is a "private clinical practice"? I really appreciate the help.

Hi:

First, you can decide what species:
1. Small animal vets work on dogs and cats
2. Exotics vets work on birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other "pocket pets"
3. Equine vets work on horses
4. Production animal vets work on cattle or pigs or poultry.

Then, you can decide what setting you work in:
1. Private practice vets work in clinics or hospitals. These can have from 1 to 20 vets in one building. The vet can also be an owner or part-owner of the clinic. These are the pet hospitals you see as you drive around and where you would take your family pet.
2. Industry vets work for just a few large producers in the dairy, poultry, or swine industry.
3. Academic vets work as teachers in veterinary schools. They give lectures or supervise clinical rotations at the teaching hospital.
4. Government vets work for government agencies such as the FDA or USDA, or for the Army.

Also, some vets get board certified to work in a very narrow specialty such as equine orthopedic surgery, small animal soft tissue surgery, dermatology, cardiology, to name but a few. (look up American College of Veterinary Surgeons in a search engine.) These require 4-5 years of additional training after vet school.

One thing to do as research is to look at resumes of vets at schools like WSU (http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu), or at local veterinary clinics (use a search engine; many of them have websites).

Enjoy your assignment!

sincerely,
-Teresa

A private clinical practice is when you, as a veterinarian, run your own vet's office, where you either work alone or with a couple other vets.

Some other places vets work are animal hospitals, zoos, and probably animal shelters and wild animal rehabilitation clinics.

There are large animal vets (horses, etc), small animal vets (dogs, cats), and exotic animal vets (sugar gliders, snakes, etc.)
