The ruckus is because Pullman, the author, is an atheist.
If the trilogy had been written by a Christian there would be NO mess and no fuss.
It is, after all, just an entertaining yarn, that is it!
The author does not mention religion one time not even in his books.
Why are people upset you ask, a rather huge case of paranoia mixed with a large dose of fear.

A matter of degree? What? Killing or lashing someone over giving a name to something and boycotting a movie that is the beginning of a trilogy which has kids having sex and the end result is the idea of killing God is hardly a matter of degree to me. I don't see how naming a Teddy bear compares to letting 6 to 12 year old kids read about atheism in a disguised form.

I never heard anyone make a big stink of The Lord of The Rings and Harry Potter...just to name 2. Well, Harry Potter yeah but not as bad as The Golden Compass. This really shows how insecured and scared people are. People need to get a life.

Hardly. You're only making yourself look like a hardcore bigot by making such comparisons. How many anti-Golden Compass riots have their been? Nobody has been demanding executions.
Typical leftist--you gloss over the atrocities of Islam and then try to elevate the rather petty grumbling of some Christians to the same level of fanaticism.

I don't understand all the controversy surrounding this movie. It is only a movie, one's representation or opinion and his way of expressing it. People should be allowed to express whichever view they wish, in whichever way they wish. Who gives Christians the right to allow certain movies to be played, and others not. Movies portray everything from sex, violence, and hatred, to love, humor, w/e. Multiple beliefs and religions are portrayed in many different types of movies. This is no different, and even though it is a children's movie, and it is "supposedly" a bad example and a movie that children should not be exposed to...first off, children probably wouldnt notice the overall, adult's perspective or moral of the story, and two, they should be exposed to all different types of views as they will be in the real world.

First of all, it's a work of fiction. (Like the Bible....) Secondly, if the church is portrayed as the bad guys, well, there have been plenty of times in history when this was the case. I have read and loved all three books in the trilogy but have not yet seen the film. My understanding is that it is less obvious in the film that the baddies are part of a church. If the Catholic Church had just kept quiet, most people who only see the film and don't read the books would probably never know.

Who cares? Catholics have a right to boycott a movie if they want. Freedom of speech by necessity has to include those you disagree with.
