"other than saving yourself from someone", isn't that the point? My life would change. I'd not be afraid to be out after dark, going or coming from my car, taking a walk...

Speaking from two decades of door work and street fights I can claim to say karate changes a lot of peoples lives. If I had a dollar for every blackbelt I have seen get flattened by some drunk regular guy I would have...well probably $100 anyway.

Sorry its probably not what you want to hear, but the most 'important lifechanging experiences' could be anything from avoiding getting mugged to fighting off a rapist, and by the time you work out what I have seen dozens of times, that most tradtional karate does not work, it will be too late for you... you will be changed beyond repair.

I'm surprised noone's mentioned the Holy book yet. I'm like Hallambra, I have read books or seen movies that have impressed me but none had that life altering effect on me. what about theatre? I can say that watching "the phantom of the Opera" by Andrew Lloyd Webber around 15 years ago opened up my world to a totally different kind of music, which is still my passion today.

I just made shodan (first degree blackbelt) a few weeks ago. It took me five years to get there. My fitness and coordination have improved a lot. I'm good but still not invincible. With all the contact I've taken during that time, my fear of getting hit has gone way, way down. You don't have to be the best to defend yourself, just be too much trouble to mess with. Also it doesn't hurt to stay out of bad neighborhoods and avoid seedy characters. Good luck with your training!

(you posted a comment on my video saying i sucked...)
danielle, it doesnt matter how old you are, it matters how long youve been training. and ive been training for a total of one day... what about you?

and to answer your question, it could change your life if you were really good and competed in competitions.. or if you stay with it, you will always be in good shape... which is pretty important for girls these days...

Health and wellness form exercise. Learning to cope with fear. Overcoming personal barriers. Learning to control your emotions. These are a few.
