I have a kitchenaid and have tried it. It works ok with the whisk attachment (not the paddle) but there are still some lumps.
Best gadget for this is a potato ricer. You can go through a large batch of potatoes in about 3 minutes. It will cost you $5 for one at walmart or target.

I always use my electric mixer for mashed potatoes. Just don't put it on the highest speed first. I mash mine just a bit before turning the machine on. Scrape the bowl occasionally, and wait until they're the consistency you want.

Absolutely! Mix on low, then medium-low speed to the desired consistency. It tastes the same as manual mashing. I do this myself with large batches.
I always try to make mashed potatoes as smooth as possible. If you don't like them really smooth, mix on low speed only, while being careful of consistency.

i do it allll the time. my beater are real skinny things....like whisk skinny but still only 4 tines or whatever, and when i mix my potatoes....i put everything in first, mash it around a little with the beaters then give em a whirl! the texture is fine cause the beaters don't mash them totally like a blender or food processor would. i like em better that way than using my masher.

That's how I always make mashed potatoes, but I like them very creamy & with no lumps. It just depends on your preference.

Absolutely! It would probably be a good idea to do them in 2 batches so the beater blades are free to incorporate air. They will come out smooth and creamy.

I've been told that it makes the mashed potatoes gluey and unpleasant, so I wouldn't try it.
