Is it a blasphemy?

Like "Oh my God! I am too fat to slip into these lovely pants!"

"Oh my God! My ice-cream just taste like sheet."

Are those people really respecting "God" by saying "OMG!" for trivial situations?

Thank you for your answer.

I think it depends. But usually the phrase "Oh my God" I think is said without thinking and this would be "taking God's name in vain". It must be important too, since there is a separate commandment about it. It makes me sad to hear it so often and it seems to have started from TV. I heard it frequently on "Friends" and found it kinda suprising at the time. Maybe it was popularized before then, I don't know. I don't think it is usually done purposely, however, and have never corrected someone on it. It would be interesting to hear how people handle this. I'm not offended by it usually, as I think it is innocently done.

But, it is nice to hear the word "God" in public. Perhaps most people say it really are addressing God purposely. I think that is awesome. If we all really said out loud "Oh my God" like a prayer, perhaps the world would be a better place. I guess the answer is ultimately whether "OMG" is good or not depends on what is in the person's heart.

Blasphemy is difficult to do, and is regarded as the unforgivable sin.

It involves your being a believer, but then turning around and teaching otherwise for personal gain or power. The only ones documented in the Bible to have committed this sin were the Pharisees who were in power at the time of Jesus.

They listened to Jesus teach, and they believed He was truly the Son of God, but because the feared losing their positions of high authority and respect in the Jewish community, they conspired to silence Jesus and retain their positions of power.

Your expression could possibly be classified as taking the Lord's name in vain. Such an expression is certainly not respectful, not keeping God in perspective, and bringing His awesome power and glory down to a menial level. You don't really need God's attention drawn to your ugly hair, funny tasting ice cream or other day to day events and astonishments.

I don't say "Oh my God", and haven't for years. I'm more likely to just say "Oh, my!". Sometimes I say "Hell", but it doesn't really mean anything. I'm more likely to say "Oh crap". I can't think of any reason why I would ever say "Oh my Darwin!". What would be the point? He wasn't a god or a saint, and he's been dead for quite a while. Are you likely to say "Oh my Aquinas!" or "Oh my Constantine!"? According to Christians, they're in Heaven right now. I've never had a frijole. I've only heard of them in cartoons, from Speedy Gonzales saying "Holy frijoles!". Same goes for hot tamales. I remember Porky Pig selling them, but I've never eaten one. Connor: I cannot swim, you stupid haggis! Ramirez: Haggis? What is haggis? Connor: Sheep's stomach, stuffed with meat and barley. Ramirez: And what do you do with it? Connor: You eat it! Ramirez: How revolting!! - from Highlander

Yes it is blasphemy. Specifically, it is taking God's name in vain (3rd commandment).

No, it is not respectful to use God's name as an exclamation point or a curse word.

Imagine you had a friend who was a little clumsy. The other kids started using her name to describe other clumsy behaviors...having a "Becca moment" or "pulling a Becca". Would you consider this respectful? Would you use the term too...even if you knew that it hurt her feelings?

I didn't realize how much I did this until my pastor gave a sermon on the 3rd commandment last summer...for weeks afterwards, I had a little "bleep button" in the form of my son..."say gosh not god mommy"...I'm not cured but it sure woke me up!

Saying this shows a total lack of respect for the Lord, our Maker. It is a habit which can be overcome. Best wishes to you, my friend.

Supposedly the third commandment says you cannot take the lord's name in vain. If you believe in the commandments, then it is wrong to exclaim those things. If you do not believe in the commandments, then it isn't.

Remember, this stuff is all subjective. It depends on what your religious beliefs are. There are no correct answers.

well if you want to split hairs prob not, as God is a generic term for a deity in general. Not the name of the God of Abraham. That would be "I am"or "Yeh-Wah" or "El Shadie" or the english Jehovah.
