I'm not asking if Muslims are violent. I'm asking if Islam is an inherently violent religion. I would probably say yes, because the foremost prophet in Islam (Muhammed) was a warlord who encouraged violence.

Any religion can be used for violence, any thought for that matter can be taken up for a cause that leads to violence. Islam itself, if you study just what it says can be hostile to ideas outside of itself, Just as Christians can be the same way, however the Koran does not prohibit violence nearly as strongly as the new testament of the bible, HOW ever look at the OT, and how violent that was, it is all subjective, and only real study on the issue will give you answers.

the way you call muhammed a warlord is an obvious clue that you have read anti islamic propaganda, difficult as it may be I suggest you read the quran(not from an anti islamic source) and try to find history books that are neutral on the subject,
islam is not a violent religion

first of all, Islam never lets us to use any kind of violence and war unless people attack to It's followers,or people attack land of It's followers these are two occasion that we are allowed to war. On the other hand, yes Islam is different from Christianity and if somebody attacks you, you do not have to forgive him/her (ıf you forgive this recommended but) you have right to ask the same type of attack to be carried out the attacker. No it is not my friend. Muhammad(peace be upon him) was no a warlord. He only fought when he had to, the wars were brought to him. He actually live a very poor and hard life. If he would of given up spreading the message of Islam he would of been a very rich man with a high status in the society. He gave up everything for Islam. He taught us how to live peaceful lives. If Muslim would actually follow the Quran and the example of the Prophet we would all live better lives.
Edit: You say you never have to fight. Ok imagine an army of soldiers coming to make you stop spreading the word of God. They tell you to stop or they will kill you. Do you stand by and let them or do you fight.

No. Islam is NOT a violent religion. Islam encourages muslims to stay away from conflict. The only restrictions we have is if it to protect our country or in self defence.

just speculation here: but i have noticed a lot of female converts to islam who all claim that islam is a peaceful religion, but they do not live in arabic nations. i am wondering myself if the violence perception we get isn't from the religion but from arab laws? maybe it's the laws/beliefs in arab nations that is so violent/teaches violence/condones violence. my understanding is that the true islamic religion teaches peace....

From my opinion, i would say that it is.
*NO OFFENCE INTENDED, AND I AM NOT BEING STEROTYPICAL*
But..they have things like honour killings.
Murder of a family member for 'bringing shame upon the family' (bringing shame, can include, a girl getting a guys telephone number, wearing makeup..etc) Basic things that many other people do, and think nothing of it !
