You do not have to select neutral to put it in 4wd, just pull the lever down to 4-hi, under the appropriate circumstances of course. You have to be driving less than 55mph, you should be on at least wet pavement, but the more slippery the better.

Depends on which 4WD system your jeep has.

If its Select-Trac. you have to manually put it into 4WD. Positions are 2WD, 4WD HI Part Time, 4WD HI Full time, Neutral, and 4LO. Depending on what your doing is what position you should use. If your in intermittant snow, dry road, snow, etc then you should select 4WD HI Full Time as this allows you to leave the vehicle in 4WD but also allows the axles and wheels to spin at different speeds. If your in deep snow or mud you should use 4WD HI Part Time as this locks both axles together, but do not use this position on dry hard surfaces (such as the highway) unless it is covered in snow or ice. Neutral is for towing the vehicle such as on all 4 wheels behind an RV. 4WD LO should only be used in severe off-road conditions or very deep snow or mud. This position allows more torque by gear reduction to all the wheels, allowing the vehicle to crawl at reduced engine speed/ground speed to help extract the vehicle if its stuck and 4WD HI range isn't working. This can also be used to help recover other vehicles that are stuck.

If your system is Quadra-Drive or Quadra-Trac you have full time 4WD which you don't have to do anything in order for the system to work. This system detects wheel slippage either front or rear and engages the system automatically. Some also include Low Range which works the same as described above.

Good luck with your Jeep.

You have a quadratrack system, you can pull the handle for 4wheel drive 'HIGH' at any speed up to 55mph(on the fly). For low range you will have to be stopped with the trans in nuetral, then shift into 4low,then back into 'D' for drive.
