What I mean by that is, Isn't there a sheet you have to go by? for example. I would like to order raspberries. Isnt there a sheet in which i look at to tell if i want canned raspberries, fresh raspberries, frozen raspberries or rasberries by the pint. This is my first time ordering and i dont want to sound stupid. to a purveyor.

Instead of asking the purveyor, how about asking your boss how they ordered food before you assumed the position.

Hi,
Tell the food rep exactly what you want and have him tell you what they carry. If that rep doesn't have what you are looking for ask another rep from another company. I found it best do most of my business with one rep only. He answered all of my "stupid" questions in a very helpful manner. But, he always knew that I had two other food reps that were quite willing to get my business if he did not help me.

Also, if you are new to this job, ask the food rep for a printout of what has been ordered before. They are usually glad to help. If you are the owner of a new restaurant then just ask them for list / book of what they carry. Some have very useful websites that are great.

Just remember that you are the buyer, so you hold the power. Make the rep work for their money.

Hope this helps,
Robin

They should have given you a product guide when you first started. If they didn't, ASK FOR ONE. And mention that you need it to send more business their way. You've really got to stand up to distributors to get anything done.

I had one distributor who was incredibly helpful, and another one who barely gave me the time of day and then wondered why the other company was getting all my business. I could sit down with Steve and say I was thinking of a new special with say, ham. He'd immediately look up all the different kinds and cuts they had. I got a price sheet every week. If they're not sucking up to you, either put your foot down (this worked with beer distributors) or find another one. Good luck!

You go to the produce section, or the frozen section or the canned fruit section. Don't you have an order sheet?
