Hello competitive shooters. I just got back from my first high power rifle match in years. I had a great time but didn't much like the prone position. I need a comfortable position that doesn't require much muscle tension (due to illness, my muscles will never be very strong). I can't find many pictures of how others setup for prone shooting. with any rifle, never mind the AR15. Any suggestions on positions? Any books you can recommend? Any ideas where I can see lots of pictures of other people's prone positions?

As mentioned above, prone is by far the most accurate position, but if you can't get comfortable and are allowed to use it competitively, there's always the good ol' seated position. Second only to prone for stability, the seated position allows your arm to rest on your leg for support, and is generally quite comfortable.

Don't know what your condition is, but you might look into investing in one of those back support belts to wear, as the position can tire the back, but it should work for you. Again, if you're in a competition, many require shots from all the common positions, but if you can get past that, it should be good for you.

Here's some more info/explanation:

I've always found prone to be the most comfortable. You may need to adjust your body or leg positions. Try sliding you legs around to see if that helps. Maybe try using a sandbag to lean against.

Standing and kneeling are going to wear on your muscles more than prone.

stable, one might anticipate that throughout an exact self-look after difficulty, listening to look after/listening to loss is waaaayy down the checklist of priorities. and 2 or 3 photos from a .357 magnum in an indoor self-look after concern (place of abode-invasion or parking storage attack or an comparable) on the brink of actual *will* quickly deafen you to a element. although, an afternoon or 2 at maximum must be all the scientific care time you go with for a *short* (non everlasting) drugs. although, while you're working in direction of for a type of probability, then a .22 LR pistol, a .25 ACP pistol or .32 ACP are all low priced recommendations. Are they -super- self-protection weapons. properly... No, no longer on the whole. They *will* be greater than a baseball bat or a boy scout knife. (do no longer forget, a .22 can doubtless be deadly - extra everybody is killed by ability of .22 rounds each 3 hundred and sixty 5 days than by ability of another high quality around - traditionally provided that .22s are *so* widely used - and persons cope with them like toys) interior the .22 container, you will possibly evaluate the Beretta kind 87, or if youin case you %. the Walther PPK 'look', you may desire to evaluate a Firestorm .22 (actual made by ability of making use of Bersa) i % a .25 ACP myself - and a Beretta Bobcat isn't a foul decision (the penetration potential isn't notwithstanding to write down residing house approximately, even though it has a excellent 'have self belief', and girls seem to locate it irresistible as stable.) once you incredibly evaluate you ought to have a minimum of a few 'worry-ingredient' and knock-down potential, then remember a .380 - such because of the fact the venerable Walther PPK (its a complication-loose and although in all probability the main favorites obtainable interior the marketplace - for factors...) which you will get 'quieter' rounds on your .357, yet they're incredibly much less-sturdy, and not extra penetrating - which might seem to defeat the reason of *making use of* a .357 interior the 1st place.

Get yourself a shooting cushion to lean on. Prone is by far the most accurate shooting position.

Try the sitting position, but prone is the best.*
