I posted this as a question as well.

As I said, if there is a fundamental aspect that one is lacking (wilfully or otherwise) that objectively disqualifies one from performing a job, then one is and should be, unqualified.

I do not feel this person should be castigated or persecuted because of his beliefs. It is out of place. It would be like a Catholic Priest refusing to say "God" but instead saying, "The Ultimate Cosmic Improbability". It is not appropriate.

I should note that I also do not "BELIEVE" in Evolution. I can observe and have observed evolution, and therefore KNOW it occurred and occurs. Belief need not apply. If one defines Belief as "Crediting with Veracity", then I would say I "Believe" in evolutionary theory as correctly defining, describing and making predictions about evolution. In that context, belief can apply.

That's actually a good reason for firing a biologist. Many (most?) kinds of work require significant prior knowledge to be done properly. A biologist who doesn't believe in evolution couldn't perform his job well at all.

Similarly a firefighter who doesn't believe that fires actually exist will probably have a hard time putting them out.

There's essentially the same amount of evidence supporting the existence of evolution as there is supporting the existence of fire.

A biologist is a scientist. They're supposed to believe in science. To not believe in the science of evolution makes for a poor biologist. His refusal to believe in science made him incompetent in his work, so he got what he asked for. Nobody wants an incompetent person working for them.

You can still be a Christian and believe in evolution.

I just wonder why it's so hard for religious fundamentalists to BELIEVE that god could have made things this way to let the UNIVERSE EVOLVE!

Plus it is really stupid to be a biologist and not believe in evolution. Kinda like big business in it for the good of humanity and not the bottom line......

A biologist should be fired for not believing in evolution for the same reason a bank teller should be fired for not believing in money.

A scientist (especially a biologist) who does not believe in evolution is not credible as a scientist - they don't have the intellect to do research, and as such, firing them seems very reasonable... though I'm sure there was more to the story than that.

i won't be in a position to work out the way you may desire to coach biology devoid of wisdom the thought of evolution at some point. If he/she understood it yet did no longer have faith it how did they tutor that disbelief? in the event that they nevertheless taught it as a thought i won't be in a position to work out the subject. in the event that they refused to coach it that's clearly turning out to be problems for the college and the pupils. As an Englishman in this talk board, i'm very shocked by way of the warmth generated over the subject of evolution and sweetness why. It surprises me once I even have constantly famous American technologies.

I would have fired the guy, too. Hahn studies a particular protein family in multiple species, not just zebrafish; he publishes papers with titles like "Unexpected diversity of aryl hydrocarbon receptors in non-mammalian vertebrates: insights from comparative genomics." He does modern developmental biology, which is so tightly wrapped up in evolutionary theory they're becoming indistinguishable. How do you go off to do a post-doc in a lab without first reading up on the work, getting excited about it all, and planning to invest yourself in it? Abraham had to have read and understood the prior work of the lab, or he shouldn't have taken the job on. Announcing that he didn't like evolution is comparable to showing up in a fish lab and announcing that he didn't like to get his hands wet. It's like taking a job as a stockbroker and denouncing capitalism and refusing to make a profit. It's like wanting to work as a carpenter but declaring a deep-seated fear of hammers and saws.

If he thinks he can get a half-mil for wrongful termination on this, I'm going to march down to the local fundie church and demand a job as youth pastor, which I will prosecute by explaining the absurdity of god-belief to the little kids in Sunday School, and then I'll sue when they fire me. This isn't simply firing someone for incidental, private beliefs—it's firing him for practices that actually conflict with the stated purpose of the job

This isn't really a lame reason, as to do his job properly he needed to accept certain scientific facts which he rejected. It would be like hiring a group of hydrophobics to be lifeguards. Even if they were willing to suit up, they couldn't do what was required of the job.

Evolution is the foundation for almost all of biology. If you're too wrapped up in your religious beliefs, then it's going to interfere with your job performance. They have to set some kind of standard.
