I have been registered as self employed but as of today I am no longer earning any kind of income. So if I contact Hm revenue to inform them of this will I not have to pay my national insurance contributions that I am currently paying each month? Do I have to let anyone else know of my change in circumstances? I have had to stop work due to ill health and may not be working for a few months because of it. I'm unsure what I should do?

You will need to declare to HM revenue that you are not working for the foreseeable future.
When you start working again, you will either need to re-register as a sole trader (if you are going back self employed) or your new employer will issue the inland revenue with a P46 so you will be on record as earning again. Hope this helps.

I suggest you visit your local Job Center.

You will not qualify for Job Seekers (I believe) for at least 6 months, however if you have been paying NI you should be entitled to something (Sickness Benefit perhaps ?)

If your household has no other income (and your savings are low) you should also qualify for Council Tax rebate .. the Job Center should be able to advise you ..

You can also try the Citizens Advise Bureau (CAB).

NB> Do it now before running up massive Credit card debt etc. .. most benefits are NOT back-dated.
