And I REALIZE that this is not Hiltlers biggest crime, but it was a part of his attempt to control people through ignorance which Americans had a fit over. It went against our beliefs of freedom of speech.

personally i enjoy banned books week.
my school library has pictures of banned books. one is like a eyechart and says "censorship causes blindness"
though burning books is different than just hiding them, so it's a little different (little being the operative word)

I cant imagine that complete censorship is good, nor can we go about with absolutely no censorship. Look at the FCC and Network TV. There are certain degrees of violence and certain words that are not legal to be uttered. We do have some censored books from our public libraries. School libraries have some censored book as well. You will not find a book encouraging Christianity in any form in a school library; why have books encouraging another belief or lack thereof that involves sin and God. The bible is filled with parables as this movie is being stated as having, why not include the bible as well? Now I want to make clear, Im not big into censorship; but I am all for any groups right to protest what they believe to be wrong be it Christian rights, gay rights, secular natured rights, pagan rights, etc. What the librarian did was underhanded and wrong; however its good to look at this particular situation from all angles. His book/movie does deal with sin, God and souls. Is that appropriate for children in a school library? Where is the line and when is it considered being crossed? Just a thought.
EDIT: And for the Hitler thing, being sponsored and funded by a church that has in the far past been an organization of terror for money and greed doesnt make one a Christian nor a Catholic.
Compare to other terrorist regimes, they honestly believe they are doing the will of God; not for money, but for the legalism within their religion.

My thoughts are that I agree with the guy who said that people should not be trying to convert others. The way it should work is that Missionaries should make themselves available and let the converts come to them. I have seen cases where they go to these countries showing the uneducated a glimpse of another culture and there is nothing wrong with that. When it gets wrong is when they offer "charity " as a bribe. To try to disguise the materials they hand out is wrong and I dont blame the Jews for burning the Bibles. Have you ever seen how a Christian will cringe from a Book of Shadows? That kind of distaste is what others feel when they are decieved.

I think censorship in America is so wrong. Things like kiddie porn, yes censor that, it's morally disgusting and illegal. Any other form sickens me. This goes for ALL speech, not just the stuff that I agree with or don't care about. For example, I would be repulsed by and never read Neo-Nazi literature, but they have rights that need to be protected. If you choose not to read something, that's a choice, not censorship. When you take away someones right to make their own choice, that's censorship.

No difference.
OT:
Awe, Fred, way to make homeschool sound like Jesus Camp. I homeschool so that my child will be able to be exposed to differing thoughts and cultures. Here, Harry Potter has been successfully banned from some public school libraries and anybody who is not a WASSP (white, Anglo Saxon straight Protestant) is look down upon. Jeesy Creesy, lets let go of the stereotypes.

Wow! Feel the love here! Attacking her family because you don't like her upbringing and religion? How Christian and loving is that?
Christians have been trying to get things banned since forever - burning the library at Alexandria to Hitler to wanting the Wizard of Oz banned. Hitler didn't burn Bibles, he was a professed Christian.
btw: raised Christian, USMC veteran, now heathen, college educated (history major, archaeology minor), writer, researcher, artist

Fahrenheit 451 a good move on the subject.
It was almost 70 years before the New Testament was written,
It took a long time for the first person to write about creation.
Books are records of events past and things to come. The Great library of Alexandra was destroyed in a day. History is destined to repeat itself if we choose not to learn from it.

It isn't. HOMESCHOOL YOUR KIDS IF YOU DON'T WANT THEM EXPOSED TO IDEAS OTHER THAN YOUR OWN. This sums up what I think:
"For a large part of the human population religion is held very close to people's hearts. Religion can be a wonderful thing but it can also cause alot of problems. People need to be able to respect that others believe differently then they do. It is not ok to push any set of religious beliefs onto others. Every religion must be represented fairly, without favoritism in society or government. Athiests and those without religious affiliation deserve respect for thier beliefs, and need to give others that respect as well."

Who says it's all right for ANYONE to ban books or any other form of expression? It's not okay for Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Republicans, Democrats, NAACP, KKK, or anyone else. If your beliefs are so fragile that they cannot hold up to a dissenting opinion, you need to reexamine your beliefs.
Edit to J T: I'm from the hills of Arkansas, and I'll match my Master's degree against yours any day.

Some people feel they need to be the moral guide for everyone else. She has no place in a library. Books should never be burned or banned.

It's not all right to me.
I know some Christians have burned Harry Potter books, but it was kind of symbolic. They'll never stop people from reading what they want to read or seeing a movie they want to see. America is a FREE COUNTRY!
