Well, any parent who would willingly cast their child into a lake of fire would be pretty sick by todays standards.
Also with as much as God likes to watch people of all ages and backgrounds suffer so much, then he would be considered negligent by todays standards as well.
Because the playpen that he purposely places us in is inherently dangerous, he could also be considered a child abuser.
Because the only thing he really seems interested in from his children is worship, then he could be considered a sociopath. which by todays standards doesn't make a good parent.

Well, yeah after Cain slew Abel social services would have been all over him, but punishment FROM a child and "god" punishment they are very similar, the great flood seems very much like the reaction of a five year old to being bitten by an ant, but perhaps that is unfair to five year olds, when has a five year old committed serial genocide(everyone alive in flood, Sodom, Gormora, and the 'godly' help given by that gray beard when after moses they cleansed the holy lands( basicly everything up to Judes II)?

Jesus said .. ye be as gods ..to some people. not that he was calling them gods..but he was saying to them that ...well hey! you say to yourselves you are the children of God ..but .. and it goes on from there as a lesson to children. ( People who truly believe in God tend to recognize over time that each of us is individually made and we are learning not just as individuals but also as a large group which ..according to scripture becomes one.. the Bride .. and then One again joined with God , the Bridegroom, to become one. )
Morbid? Not really. God also promises all of our pain and suffering and sorrows and tears shall be wiped away and what will remain is what we each learned about right from wrong individually and as one. This kind of learning takes incredible arrangements of everything that ever happens ever. But, hey..what the heck? God can do all things. Even teach us.

If you love your child, don't you warn them of consequences to their actions? So does God.
If we teach our children there are punishments, this prepares them for life in the world.
Or, should we let them grow into adulthood, thinking anything they wish to do is just fine?
The jails would be full, the courts crowded, full of people that do not realize consequences. They all would think they were being treated unfairly.

I have seen a few Christians and Muslims justify eternal torment with the parental punishment metaphor, but I have to agree with you, the whole idea is abusive and morbid.
The really bright believers tend to not go that route.

Do you mean like the story of God the Father kicking Adam and Eve out of their home for breaking a rule and then punishing all his unborn grandchildren for the sin of their parents for all eternity?
Tell me again how that is moral and ethical ?

I find the whole parenting example of God to be a very bad one. Would you ever ask one of your children to sacrifice their child?
Would you put a gun in their toy chest and tell them not to play with it?
Would you wait over 200,000 years to reveal the way to relate to you?
Would you send another of your children to be scarified by your kids?

If one brings up a child as God intends that is exactly what is to be done... the instruction God provides for brining up a child is very clear.... however... it only applies to those of The Church and their childeren ... all others are free to do as they choose, and can getaway with, under the laws of man.

It depends on if you're talking about "punishment" or chastisement or the wrath of God. God chasten those He loves...as a parent would a child. Now, the wrath of God is something TOTALLY different...Believers aren't "punished".
