A major topic of discussion in the New Orleans area of late has been whether or not to demolish some low income housing units. They look very bad and have been like that for a long time. My question is, is there a way to fix poverty, just here in the U.S.? The people that live off the government for years and years must be made to get off the free boat. I can understand someone being "helped" for a maximum of 3 years, but you're not suppose to be on there forever. I think you have to find a way to change the culture. The Orleans Parish public schools have traditionally been horrible, but I don't think it's the student's fault. I think the parents of children nationwide should have to push their children to succeed, and be involved in helping them. People being helped should be actively trying to find a job, not getting into trouble with the law, and their kids should be held to a minimum GPA. I think this is a major problem that must be fixed. Does anyone agree?

I agree. We should help our own before helping those of a foreign country.

Government must subsidize impoverished communities damaged by Katrina instead of spending trillions of dollars in Iraq.

Well new orleans will be under water in 50 years, no matter what the government does.

We shouldn't spend a penny investing in the rebuilding of the city.

The wetlands that used to protect NO, are all gone now.

Without those wetlands, there is nothing to stop the continual erosion of the land areas around new orleans and bring the entire area, under sea level.

you are right about students. it is ultimately the parents who influence their children. i fear that in new orleans (im from near the area) it has become a vicious cycle of parents and children who have no drive to become better. and it will take a very long time to reverse this attitude. i think the best thing would be to tear down the housing units. the people of that area need to disperse, they need to get away from one another and out of their micro society that discourages prosperity. then maybe they can begin to think clearly.
