I've been invited to attend a three-day birthday celebration for a friend who is an internationally mobile business executive. This guy has EVERYTHING. I can hardly show up at the party empty handed....what do I get him that costs, say, between $500 and $1,000???? He's a wine lover, lover of golf and exotic cars.

I think that you should avoid vacations/gift certificates to inns, etc. Someone like this guy may or may not be able to find a weekend to "relax" and use it before it expires.

I think that if you spend some time researching wine vendors, you can find one who sells "the finest" and will pick something out for you. Another idea is to find a nice vintage of a really fabulous scotch or other liquor.

Truffles or caviar go well with the finest wines and spirits, perhaps one of these delicacies.

the latest gadget - if you don't think he's the sort to have already bought it - whether it's a all-in-one phone, etc.

semi-auto pump espresso maker - there is a new one out that is getting rave reviews, I'd have to hunt for it, though. FOUND IT - link below. It is in your price range.

Think of what people normally buy, then figure out what the best version of that is. There is a high-end version of EVERYTHING.

Where did he go to college? A university chair is nice, or another high-end mememto of his alma mater.

Don't give him gift cards or the like - it will be work for him that he probably doesn't have time for. If you truly can't think of anything, contact his personal assistant and find out if she has recommendations - or what sorts of things she anticipates he'll receive and then think of variations/accessories for those.

many things - first editions of classic books, for example - will be out of your price range. I think you'll do well with the gift ideas above. If you know this fellow fairly well, you might add to the list with items that have come up in conversation - or tasteful but humorous gifts that might reference an inside joke or memorable conversation or event.

Good luck! I don't envy you this task, but I'm sure the party will make up for it!

EDIT: New ideas I just had while rereading your question: since he has "everything" why not make a donation in his name to his alma mater or a charity organization he supports (again, his PA can help you with recommendations). These sorts of organizations can provide you with a nice card that you can tuck into a birthday card or note. A card is enough to bring in - no one will point and laugh if you aren't hauling an extravagantly wrapped box.

Well, what does your mom like to do? Ask yourself her passions and then choose a category to shop within, such as cooking/kitchenware, entertainment, gardening, clothing, jewelry, athletic gear, etc. Also consider whether she would prefer a gift card or receiving an item personally. When in doubt, make her a card and write a sweet message for her. I think parents treasure heartfelt words more than any other gift. A tip: Telling fellow Yahoo! Answers users a little about your mom, like her interests and what she's received and loved in the past, would help us in trying to answer your question.

OK so you have a fairly decent budget.

A weekend at High Meadows Inn, in Scottsville VA - they have a first-rate vineyard as well. And it's a beautiful 1830's federalist building - right in the heart of VA horse/golf country. It's a lovely, romantic place and the staff is wonderful.

They have weekend wine tastings and there are several first-rate golf courses - good fox hunting too if he's horsey.

hhmmm.. well I just came across a wine chiller for vehicles - I believe it was $80 to $100 (chill the bottle on the way to a party) on the bed bath and beyond website. They have some great ideas there as well. Try that with a few bottles of Dom P and you've got yourself a nice gift! Or try this link (I'm loving the U-shaped decanter!!)

If he is the owner of an exotic cars, find a detailer in his area whom he would trust his cars to get detailed by (usually BMW and Mercedes dealers do their own detailing).

An experience would be nice. Look for off the wall things that you can purchase a gift card for and give to him. Driving a race car. Playing a round of golf with a pro. Just things normal people wouldn't think of. HTH

I'm trying to think of something I'd want if I were your friend. I keep coming up with the same thing every time.

A 20 year old college girl. :-)

Good luck man.

If he is into wine, get him a nice Wine. Call a wine shop, give them your budget and ask what they have. They should know what you want and need.
