I live the open floor plan that the ranch style gives. Larger living space, etc. Plus its easier when you have smaller children, before i purchase i want to hear some of the negatives to both

I have had both and currently in a Cape Cod,which I love. Cape Cods are all built different though. Mine has 2 bedrooms on the bottom and the entire upstairs is the master. Heating is not too much of an issue, for heat rises. We damper the vents upstairs in the winter.Cooloing....we have to run a window unit when it is really hot outside but it has not changed the electric bill that much. The ranch was nice, and like other said it is more senior ready, but I like the Cape better.

The ranch is good for being able to navigate in you rolder age and when you have youngins' keep an eye on them but there's not really a way to keep them in one spot. The bad part is heating. When in a formal home plan you can close off the rooms you ain't using and keep the heat where you want it. it all depends on where you live. if it gets cold in the winter get a cape. if it's on the coast, get a ranch.

I'm assuming you mean Cape Cod style? I like the look of a Cape house, its classic style, shutters, etc.

However, energy-wise, I think a ranch style would be easier to keep warm/cool. Also (thinking long-term), it would be easier for an aging body to navigate.

I like a cape because I like having the bedrooms upstairs, away from the entertainment areas. Something intrusive about the idea of guests wandering into a bedroom to poke around, tho if they are truly motivated, guess they could creep around upstairs too.
Also I grew up in a cape, so there's a certain sentimental, nostagic thing going on.

I would pick a Ranch style. I like the one level idea because I hate going up and down stairs and as some others have mentioned, it is harder on older people. I would also hate trying to vacuum the stairs (packing the vacuum up and down) and be fearful of children or older people falling down the stairs.

Good luck to you.
