Without being hypocritical? I doubt there was anyone in the course of all of human history who has managed to not become entangled in the broad mesh that is our culture's usage of the word hypocrite. It could apply to virtually everyone (even, depending on what you decide to knit-pick, Jesus). The best way to cure intolerance by not being hypocritical is to lead by example, and be a tolerant human being. By doing so, however, you could care less about others' intolerance...and, you would draw no attention whatsoever.
Transcending such petty matters is admirable in of itself, but, if change is your goal, you are going to have the tolerate the fact that you may dip your toes into hypocritical waters; it's the only way to preach.

The move towards toleration has always been approached as an 'all or nothing' idea. Religious toleration in particular. Tolerating people is not always the same as tolerating what they think and do. You can be intolerant of Islam and still have nothing against Middle-Eastern people. Too much toleration causes simmering tensions by attempting to paper over the cracks.
It's only because people will never agree on the means and ends of things that government is necessary; like government, tolerance is only a limited means and not a panacea.

It depends on your tolerance level
I mean how much intolerance can you tolerate before becoming intolerant.
Gandhi seems to have been pretty good in this, both as a practitioner and a teacher.
And the strange thing about it is that with Gandhi it worked.

Good point Oracle, I'm a bit of an idealist though, but the pressure valve point says it all.
Happy to see you've got into the festive spirit.

By not reacting to it with aversion, thereby causing things to get worse, but rather understanding that "intolerance" arises due to causes and conditions and having compassion, patience and altruism for the subject of intolerance.
