Many people find it offensive because the meaning has changed. Its not about giving and sharing anymore. Its about buying gifts.
Also I know some people dont like it because Chrismas was a pagan holiday at first and the christian church made it into Jesus birthday.
But Jesus real birthday is in the spring. Check the Bible!

I dont know of any people who find Christmas offensive.
Could you be more specific?
Later: Regarding your mention of your mother's views on the Muslims. She is right to be cautious - as they do not appear to be our friends, some of them, just now
The Muslims, however, are not attempting to take away Christmas. Your mother is over reacting a bit.
There are Americans who will ask that Christmas Trees and other Christian or religious icons not be placed in public places like Town Hall and such, nor paid for my public funds. Not everyone is Christian, believe it or not...

Christmas is a pagan holiday.
Christ was not born at that time of the year. Read the Bible concerning the birth of Christ.

I never hear of this Christmass in Japan. When I come to USA, my friend Kumiko tell me some about it. It not sound like fun with people burn things and self with candles. My lover used to be her lover. He buy her $3000 Cartier bracelet and say he buy them for 5 more women. I not want him buy gifts for 5 more women. He buy me $15,700 Piaget watch for my birthday. I say forget this Christmas.

I don't find it offensive. Never heard of anyone who did. But Christmas does not orriginally celebrate the birth of Christ. He was not born on 24 december.

I don't. I find people who are offended by "Happy Holidays" annoying though.
Not everyone celebrates Christmas and its not the only winter holiday so Happy Holidays is OK.

i find the rampant materialism and corporate manipulation SEVERELY offensive. nothing about the actual holiday really... just the way it has become part of our ridiculous culture
EDIT: your mum and you can do whatever yall feel like in your own home. no one can take that away. she sounds a bit paranoid to me... just no nativity scene on the court house front lawn... thats just not right.
