We would need alot more information in order to give you some advice to get the most back. There is not some magic way to increase your refund, well legally at least. Either you qualify for certain credits or you don't, and either you have certain deductions or you don't. My advice is to contact a tax professional in your area. When I say tax professional, I am referring to an EA, CPA, or tax accountant who has expertise in taxes, not H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt.

For future reference, the best tax advantages are available to self-employed individuals and business owners.
Personally since I have a business that I do from home, I am able to benefit from a great deal of tax write offs. Business expenses as well as part of my monthly home office costs, like phone, internet, gas, lights, even mortgage or rent.

May not help so much this go around, but definitely an option to consider for next years returns.

I hope all goes well with your husband being in Iraq. All my best to you!

File jointly with your husband.

Presumably he left you the POA to sign the return.

His pay while he's in a combat zone will be tax-free.

Thanks, and good luck....
