Slang means informal words or phrases used by a particular sub-section of society, such as criminals, fishermen, tramps, schoolboys, prostitutes, Travellers, immigration officers etc. It could even be a sub-sub-sub-section of society, like the pupils in class 3B of a particular school, say.
Slang has nothing to do with abusing language and slang words may be vulgar or non-vulgar, offensive or totally inoffensive.
Once slang becomes formalised, one calls it 'jargon'. For instance, among stamp collectors, 'unmounted mint' means an unused stamp that has never had its gum disturbed by being stuck to a hinge, in the world of patents, 'a plurality of' means more than one.
Many words started out as slang and eventually became accepted. For instance, 'cabbage' comes from Latin 'caput', meaning 'head', and its forerunner is believed to have been part of the slang of the Roman troops occupying Britain 1900 years ago, replacing the original 'caulis'.
