My family was planning a trip to Italy and we have the plane tickets purchased and everything. However, my dad passed away suddenly and now the airlines need a death certificate to prove my dad has passed away. But death certificates take forever to be processed, and we leave for Italy at Christmastime.

We have tried asking everywhere, including the airlines and everyone just seems too hard to get a hold of. Wonder if anyone knows anything else.

It depends on the airline, but you might want to see if they'll accept an official letter from the funeral home you used for your Dad (and then get one). I do know an obituary is usually not enough. Please accept my condolences on the loss of your father.

If you already have the tickets purchased, why does the airline require a death certificate? You should be able to have the funeral home or the coroner fax a statement that you could show the airline. My condolences for your loss.

My boss lost his son and therefore wasn't able to go on a business trip. All I had to do was fax them a copy of the obituary, and they refunded the ticket purchase price instead of issuing a credit.

I seem to remmeber getting several death certificates to handle issues when my mother passed away, and it really didn't take more than a week. You mortuary / funeral arranger will help you.

Alot of times they will accept a phone number to the mortuary so they can verify by phone.

I assume he was either buried or cremated
His name will appear on the forms
Or an obituary

Sorry about your loss
