(I'm 16)
So I have sleeping problems. It seems to take me forever to fall asleep at night, and when I do, I constantly wake up. I miss a lot of school(mainly morning classes) because when it's time to get up, I have bad headaches, and I feel like crap. I'm very restless at night, and only get about 5 hours, if I'm lucky. I'm home now, because of this problem. I stayed home for the day, after I woke up around 10, because my history teacher has a bounty on my head. Seriously, he came into my biology class, asking where I was. When he noticed I wasn't there, the two techers had a "discussion" out in the hallway. (or so my friend says) This has become a huge problem. My parents don't believe me, the school thinks I'm skipping class, and I feel terrible. Please help me, since no one else will!
P.S.- My dad suffers from a sleeping disorder, sleep apnea. Though it's much different than what I'm dealing with.

The thing is, my parents won't take me to the doctor. They don't think it's that serious. The school consuler asked if there was a reason I was missing so many days, and I told her my problem. She just told me to go to bed earlier. I'm screaming my lungs out, but no one is listening. It's like I have no voice in his world..

Doctor. Make an apointment. ASAP. Perhaps you should talk to your Dad about your symptoms, he should understand. If not, try any other way you can do get a doctor appointment.
In the meantime, manage your stress, and talk to your teachers about your sleeping problem, and ask for any missed work. Just try to get your work done the best you can.
Overall, take a chill pill. I know this is extremely stressful, but more stress added to it will do you no good, and could make things worse.
I cannot offer any medical advice, though. Not only because I'm not a doctor, but because I have never had sleep apnea, only insomnia. ):
I wish you the best of luck, though.

The problem is there is nothing wrong with you, and the adults in your life can't seem to recognize that.
Your a teenager, and teenagers need more sleep than adults: typically 9 to 10 hours a day. Teenagers also typically sleep through the late morning. Adults sleep at night.
One of the major problems with our society is that we are forcing our kids to get up at extremely early hours in the morning and to go to school, when they should be sleeping. Our kids aren't learning because their bodies naturally want to be asleep, and we are making them unhealthy because they arn't getting enough sleep.
Unfortunatly, your options are limited. You can talk to your doctor about seeing a specialist, and try to convince your parents and teachers that sleep is important, and that your only doing what your biological nature wants you to do. But the principal isn't going to change the start time of your school just because it is healthier for the students.
You can also go to bed at the same time every night (including weekends,) and wake up at the same time every morning. At first it will be difficult because you wont be used to going to bed early. Don't sleep in during the weekends. It is important that you get used to a regulare schedule, and if you sleep in or stay up late you will mess that up.
Get at least 9 hours of sleep every night and turn off the tv and the computer at least an hour before bed. Also, an hour before your bed time, turn down the lights, so your body thinks it is night and you will get sleepy.
Once you establish a regular sleep schedule you will find it easier gettng up in the morning.

Shame, shame on your parents for not taking you to a doctor. You should be having a checkup every year. You'd get good advice on how to fall asleep and stay asleep, like keeping a solid routine, no radio, ipod or tv while falling asleep, getting up and going about your day even if you didn't sleep the night before. During the day no caffeine, and get at least an hour of exercise. Bad sleep can ruin your health, so get help now while you are young.

ok well if you cant get help...you have to do it on your own...which might take some work. try getting into a routine of running each afternoon for getting rid of extra energy. DO not drink anyhting at all with caffine and lay off of chocolate for a while, as that has caffine too. no food after 7 no matter how mungry you are, and lastly...tomorrow MAKE yourself wake up on time and go to school...the more you make yourself do that, the more you will be tired at night. If all of that together fails, then talk to you guidance councelor again and see if you cant get a meeting with your parents set up. if they dont listen, find otu with nyour next physical is and talk to the doctor then, or set up your own appointment.

You could still have sleep apnea or a sleeping disorder! Please go to the doctor. If you are only getting 5 hours of sleep a night (at best) and you are 16, you really need a check-up. Esp. since it is controlling your life. :) Sleep apnea strongly runs in families and does not "look" the same on every person.

I have been there!! I have to ask an important question.. How much caffeine are you consuming a day? Diet soda, regular soda, tea, chocolate, Excedrin etc..? Caffeine takes quite a few hours to metabolize completely so this may be something to look at.

You sound pretty stressed out. If at all possible you need to get some help. You sound young and I really don't know what to tell you. Maybe some one at church will listen, or a school counselor. Just a thought.

you need to talk to your doctor and find out why your sleeping habits are so poor. Your body needs its rest and you will fall back in school if you don't get it worked out.
