You can start gathering your information now but the IRS will not accept paper returns prior to Jan 2 or e-filed returns prior to Jan 11.

I'm self-employed. I know all my deductions, and I know how much income I'm paying myself from my incorporated business. So in my case I can create my tax return, but I do have to wait on forms from my bank before I can submit it to the IRS.

You can start gathering your information and compiling it. But you need to wait until year end and start getting financial year end statements to complete your tax return.

You can begin by itemizing expenses or deductions.
You won't have your W2 until Jan. You must have that in order to file.
