Just because the Buddhist principle teachings love, no death, enlightenment, etc. that does not mean that monks or other followers do not inflict damage and hurt on others. They stand up for themselves when they have to on principle, just like everyone else has done....take a look at some history - or currently Myanmar.
As far as conversion - find a buddhist temple and seek out its leader, start reading about the religion, its history, etc.

There are plenty of Buddhist temples in New York. I would suggest, though, that you do research into what kind of Buddhism you want to convert to. There are many schools of Buddhism and they can be very different from each other.
This is not a decision to rush in to or take lightly. Visit temples, speak to practitioners, meditate, take your time. If you find a place in Buddhist practice, say, a particular temple or teacher, when the time is right, there are rituals to affirm your dedication.

To be a Buddhist (www.buddhanet.net) all you have to do is logically agree w/ the Buddha's teachings and declare that you're tired of rolling around in what we call "cyclic existence". There's a lot more to it than what you perceive at this point.
There are various "vehicles" of Buddhism, so if that's your path, via the site I gave you, you can learn the basics and branch out from there.
To become a Muslim, you do what they call "revert" to Islam and after study of THEIR faith, in very healthy depth and still feel you want to revert, then you take the Shahada (declaration of faith) which, in English declares: "There is no god but Allah and Muhammad was His messenger".
Talk to someone in a local Islamic center, research online and I'm positive you'll find very kind people who will helpfully guide you along.
Whichever path you take I wish you great happiness and its causes and freedom from suffering and its causes!

You don't need to sign anything, or even convert really. Just sit down and study the teachings of the Buddha. There are even people who accept the Christian God and follow the Buddha. But if Christianity isn't for you, find yourself a master and start meditating.
Two good sites:
for some Dharma talks: http://www.dharmapunx.com/htm/mp3.htm
A good blog with some great resources:

Unless Buddhism and Islam have certain rules for Christians who want to cross over to them, I would think that all you would have to do is study their sacred texts, philosophies, etc. and get acquainted with others in whichever faith you choose.

Buddhism is seriously like a cult. There's no real justice, but overemphasis on creation somehow becoming "one" with Creator.
Go with Islam, cause there is only one truth.
