Earlier this year. As mentioned before, there are some premium wineries that are boxing their wines into 5 liter boxes (Franzia is one). The foil liner inside keeps all the air out, so when you pour the first glass, it will be the same as the last glass.
I even checked out some French wineries in the Bordeaux region -- I was looking to order a case of bottles directly from the winery, and I notices many of them had 32 liter boxes for sale. It was cheaper than the bottles (and exactly the same wine) and easier to ship.

Not for a long time. That was my introduction to wine and it must have been all right, because I still drink wine and now work for a winery. :) They don't produce wine in a box, though...

Sometime in the early 90's. I've heard some upscale wineries are now promoting box wines, and they're better than Franzia now. But I have yet to try it to see if it's really as good of a quality as they're saying.

you guys will love this...
i live in san antonio tx and there are some rivers we can go upto and tube down. well they recently put a glass ban, so everything has to be cans or plastic. well what we do since it is so cheap/stronger than beer, and easy to move, is we buy boxed wine, take that bag of wine out and drink it like a giant capri sun while we float the river!
